1. Monolithic Slab vs. Modular Bricks: What is the Real Difference?
When homeowners ask me which driveway system will last longer, I start by explaining how each surface carries weight.
Pattern imprinted concrete is a monolithic slab. That means ready-mixed structural concrete (we use C35 strength reinforced with millions of polypropylene fibres) is poured in one continuous 100mm to 125mm pour over a compacted stone sub-base. The slate, stone, or cobblestone impressions are stamped into the wet surface using specialist textured mats. Because it is a single solid slab, it spreads tyre loads across its entire footprint.
Block paving is a modular flexible pavement. It consists of hundreds or thousands of individual concrete or clay pavers, typically 50mm or 60mm deep, bedded on 30mm of precision-screeded sharp sand. The individual bricks do not stick together with cement; instead, fine kiln-dried silica sand is vibrated between the tight joints to create “frictional interlock”. When a car tyre presses on one block, the sand joints transfer the load to adjacent blocks.
Both systems can last 30+ years when properly installed. However, because block paving depends on individual pieces resting on sand, it requires more ongoing vigilance to ensure that water and moss do not erode that critical joint sand.
2. Weed Resistance & Weekend Upkeep Compared
If there is one complaint London homeowners bring to me constantly, it is weed pulling. London’s damp climate, combined with airborne dandelions and sycamore seeds, makes any porous crack a prime target for green growth.
Imprinted Concrete: 100% Weed Suppression. There are no joints. The grout lines you see between the slate tiles or cobblestones are pressed into the solid concrete surface. Weed roots simply cannot penetrate a 100mm fibre-reinforced concrete slab. You will never spend a Sunday morning on your hands and knees applying chemical weedkiller. The surface only requires a light wash down with a garden hose and a reseal every 3 to 5 years to maintain its water-repellent shine.
Block Paving: Ongoing Joint Care Required. Weeds do not grow from beneath our block paved driveways because our geotextile weed membrane stops them. However, airborne weed seeds fall into the sand joints from above. If rain washes out the top few millimetres of sand, moss and weeds take root quickly. To prevent this, you must brush fresh kiln-dried sand into the joints every 2 years, or choose our optional polyurethane joint stabiliser which cures the sand into a hard, weed-resistant barrier.
3. Heavy Electric Cars & London Clay Soil Settlement
The average London driveway looks very different today compared to fifteen years ago. Modern family SUVs and electric vehicles (such as the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q8 e-tron, or Range Rover) regularly weigh between 2.2 and 2.8 tonnes. Concentrated tyre weights and stationary wheel turning exert tremendous stress on driveway paving.
Compounding this challenge is London’s notorious clay subsoil. London clay swells dramatically during wet winters and shrinks during dry summers.
- Imprinted Concrete on Clay: Because the slab is monolithic and fiber-reinforced, it acts like a bridge over minor subsoil movements. Laser-cut contraction joints allow controlled thermal movement without visible cracks. It cannot develop tyre dip lines or sunken hollows.
- Block Paving on Clay: If the crushed stone foundation is less than 150mm thick, heavy EV tyres will slowly push the sand bedding down, creating visible tyre ruts. At Pavdrive, we prevent this by digging 220mm deep, laying a heavy geotextile separation membrane, and roller-compacting 150mm of Type 1 MOT crushed granite stone.
4. Future Underground Access: Pipes, Drainage & EV Cables
This is one area where block paving holds a clear and decisive advantage.
With the rapid transition to electric cars and heat pumps, many London properties will require trenching across the front drive over the next decade to install high-voltage EV charger cables, new water supply pipes, or broadband ducts.
How Repairs Work:
On Block Paving: An electrician or plumber can carefully lift a line of pavers, dig the necessary trench, lay the cable, backfill the trench with compacted stone, screed fresh sharp sand, and relay the exact same pavers. Once joint sand is swept in, the repair is completely invisible.
On Imprinted Concrete: Trenching requires cutting through the reinforced concrete slab with a diamond blade saw. While we can patch the concrete and re-stamp the pattern, the color match on the cut joint line will never be 100% invisible because the original slab has aged in the sunlight.
If you know you will be installing an underground EV charger or upgrading your water mains in the near future, I strongly advise either choosing block paving or having us pre-install an underground duct sleeve beneath your concrete driveway before we pour.
5. London Council Planning Permission & SuDS Rules
Under UK Town and Country Planning regulations, paving over more than 5 square metres of front garden requires formal planning approval from your London borough council—unless surface water is managed sustainably on your own property.
Neither system requires planning permission when installed correctly by Pavdrive:
- Imprinted Concrete: Because the solid slab is impervious, we install recessed ACO slot drainage channels along boundary falls to direct stormwater into lawn soakaways.
- Block Paving: Can be installed with permeable blocks featuring drainage nibs, or with standard blocks draining into ACO channels.
